Ampera is about to embark on an impressive feat to enter the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland next week. An event has been planned where the Ampera takes part in a cross-country journey from Rüsselsheim in Germany to Geneva in Switzerland to make its grand entry to the Motor Show in time.

Ampera is about to embark on an impressive feat to enter the Geneva Motor Show '> Chevrolet Volt.

The first part of this 370 miles long journey shall use the energy stored in the 16 kWh lithium-ion battery of the prototype vehicle. When the battery’s charge gets low, after roughly 40 miles, the on-board internal combustion engine will start generating enough electricity to keep the car going for the rest of the journey.

The car will be powered by the Voltec plug-in hybrid system, as was revealed at last year’s Detroit Auto Show. The charge time for the battery is only about two to three hours. The Ampera has been designed to suit the daily driving needs of most European travelers.

With an attempt to be a healthy substitute to Chevrolet’s Volt, the new Ampera goes on sale early next year. Its American counterpart will start deliveries towards the end of 2010.
