Beijing Auto Show Preview: Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake

(March 30, 2010 )

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting? Brake edition is expected to be displayed at this year’s Beijing Auto Show. The model is supposed to compete against the likes of upcoming Audi A7 and Bmw 5-series GT. The CLS wagon features almost the same design as its sedan/saloon model. Although the rumors of the shooting brake edition were doing the rounds for quite some time now, the car is now expected to go in production as a CLS estate.

The car is expected to make its debut at the Beijing Auto Show next month. If indeed it does so and is eventually led into production, its primary competitor is expected to be the new BMW 5-series Gran Turismo. The primary objective of this shooting brake model is to lure the younger population and explore the niche market for the brand.

The CLS shooting brake is expected in 2012 and the car is said to be designed as more of a wagon than a real shooting brake. The car will have a four doors and a rear cargo area, something that fits the description of a wagon or an estate more than a typical shooting brake, which normally has two doors, an extended rear and is basically a coupe based car.

"Traditional rules don't apply any more. Established segments are becoming increasingly fragmented," said a Mercedes insider.
